What To Do, And What Not To Do, On Social Media During Divorce

SocialM4

There is no shortage of social media platforms these days and when you are going through a divorce, you may see them as a great source of support. The divorce process is extremely difficult and it is true that you need support from friends and family during this time. However, social media can be a tricky thing to maneuver as you go through the divorce process. Below are some things you can do and some things you should not do while using social media during the divorce process.

What You Can Do On Social Media During Divorce

You do not have to refrain from using social media entirely while going through a divorce. However, you should:

  • Look at your posts from a different perspective: You may think that posting fun pictures and updates is a great way to keep your mind off of the divorce. This may be true, but you should also consider how anything you post can be used against you. For example, if your friends took you out for cocktails and you posted a picture of it to social media, your ex may use it against you in child custody hearings.
  • Post updates about your children: You should also be careful about any posts you make about your children, but there is a right way to do it. For example, you do not want to post updates about child custody hearings. On the other hand, posting pictures from the soccer game you took your children to can actually help your child custody case.
  • Check your list of friends or followers first: Even when not going through a divorce, it is easy to forget that your list of friends or followers may actually be people you no longer want any contact with. Check your lists before you post to ensure that your spouse, spouse’s family and friends, and anyone else who may want to hurt your divorce case are no longer following you.

What You Should Not Do on Social Media During Divorce

Although there are certain things you should keep in mind when posting to social media, there are other things you must absolutely avoid. These include:

  • Trusting your privacy settings: Privacy settings on social media should always be fairly tight. Still, you cannot rely on them to prevent certain people from seeing certain posts. Seriously consider anything you are going to post to social media. If there is even the slightest chance that it could hurt your case, do not do it.
  • Being boastful: You may be eager to show off your new car or to post pictures of the vacation you just took, but this will likely hurt you in the end. Making big purchases during a divorce can always come back to hurt you in property division hearings. If you post to social media about them, it only increases the chance of this happening.
  • Talking about your case: It is unwise to speak about the details of your divorce case with anyone but your spouse and your lawyer. If you do want to talk about certain details with friends or supportive family members, never do it on social media, and remember that you need to trust that they will not, either.
