What To Do, And What Not To Do, On Social Media During Divorce

Do_Don't_SocialM

Social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook have become an important part of people’s lives today. When you are going through a divorce, these platforms can offer an easy and convenient way to get the support you need. However, the actions you take during divorce will have a significant impact on your case, including your activity on social media. Below, our Media divorce lawyer outlines what to do, and what not to do, on social media while you are still going through the process.

What to Do on Social Media?

Contrary to what many people think, you do not have to entirely avoid social media when getting divorced. There are many ways to use it safely and not hurt your case. These are as follows:

  • Carefully consider your posts: Posting positive updates and photos may help take your mind off of the difficult divorce process. However, you must carefully consider how any post will impact your case. For example, you may want to post pictures of you going out for cocktails with some friends. Your spouse may use these against you by arguing that you are an alcoholic, even if you rarely drink. If they are successful, it could hurt your child custody case.
  • Posting about your children: Again, you do not have to refrain from posting about your children entirely during divorce. In fact, if it is done right, posting about your children could help your case. Showing pictures of your child’s soccer game will show that you take an active interest in their life.
  • Check your list of followers: It is easy to overlook the fact that people on your followers list may no longer have your best interests at heart. Your spouse or their family and friends may still follow you and report back to your partner about any particularly damaging posts.

Things to Avoid on Social Media

There are ways to make social media work for you during divorce, but there are also certain things you should avoid doing. These include:

  • Rely on your privacy settings: If you keep your privacy settings fairly tight, you may rely on them too heavily when posting. This is a mistake, as you never really know who may see your social media posts. If you think your spouse could use a post against you, protect yourself and do not post it.
  • Boasting about big purchases: You may be very proud of the fancy new sports car you just purchased and want to show it off on social media. You should refrain from doing this, though. If your spouse learns of the new purchase, it could hurt your property division case.
  • Talk about the divorce: Divorce is a legal process and so, you should not talk about the status of your case or any other legal details. Also refrain from talking about your spouse, as this could also hurt you in the end.
